Life of the M.D. in Dhaka

Since our mentor from UVA arrived, the gods of Dhaka have been generous with us. We have dined finely, been invited to wonderful get-togethers with physicians and academics and conversed with brilliant minds. It's so refreshing! Two nights ago, we had dinner at our local PI's office. Him and his wife are both physicians. (Many of the physicians here actually are married to physicians). It was a lovely night, especially meeting everyone's families and chatting about different things.

Our mentor brought with him two post-docs and a fellow. They are so great and we've really enjoyed having more UVA people with us. Last night, a big group of us went out to a super fancy Thai-Chinese restaurant for dinner. We had a parasitologist from Nagasaki University with us. Sake was served. I realized that people who do international health have to be very socially adept. And then I realized that you know you're with scholars when even though everyone is tired, they cite recent journal articles and studies from around the world to prove their point. Oy.

Today we (us little med students) visited the government's infectious diseases hospital. It was absolutely fascinating. We saw several patients with tetanus, HIV, Hepatitis E (!!) and Diphtheria (!!!!!). Each one had an incredible story, as did the HIV patients at the ICDDR. Today was a great clinical day. I'm most grateful to the doctor at the ID Hospital who taught us so much and was so interested in teaching us.

Afterwards, me, two of the girls from here that work in the parasitology lab, and the ID fellow and postdoc from UVA, took a trip to go shopping and the salon. Ahh....my time in Dhaka is ending so nicely!
