Question: When Did You First Realize You Cared About People?

Answer: We would go to the pool every single day it was open. One day Yen came over. I was putting on my bathing suit and asked her if Mai, her older sister, was waiting outside. She said that Mai wasn't coming. That was strange. Mai, Yen, Quan, Pauline and me always went to the pool together every single day it was open. "Why isn't Mai coming?" I asked. Yen seemed nervous, "She's bleeding. I don't know what's going on. But Mai is at home crying and she's bleeding."
"Did she get hurt??" I asked.
"I don't know! She just woke up and she's been bleeding all morning.....in her underwear!"

I was so confused and worried. I was probably eight years old and all I knew was that my best friend's older sister was bleeding to death. And to make matters worse, she was bleeding to death alone. Both her parents were at the nail salon working. I rushed to my mom and told her that Mai was bleeding and terribly sick and that someone has to help her. My mom told Yen to tell Mai to come over. I didn't see anything else was happen except that I thought of my mom like a doctor that day. I saw her talking to Mai, instructing her on what to do. She gave her something in her hand and Mai went to the bathroom. Mai didn't go with us to the pool that day but I was glad she got help and that she lived.

That's when I knew I wanted to be someone whose work in life was to care for others.
